New name: Stop sweets
On September 3, 2019, Google introduced Android 10, its new mobile operating system version. Previously, the company had traditionally named its firmware for sweets. The letter in the name was an indication of the corresponding dessert name. For example, Android 8 O is called “Oreo”, Android 9 P is also known as “Pie”. For Android 10, it was assumed that Google will therefore opt for a dessert with the initial letter Q. For a long time, therefore, “Quiche” and “Queen of Puddings” were traded as possible names. But also “Quindim” and “Quesito” from the Brazilian area were in conversation. The examples already show that the naming is strongly influenced regionally. In many other countries, however, users do not know the sometimes special desserts.
For this reason, the company has decided for a radical change: For the first time in the history of Android Google renounces a dessert name . The new Android version is therefore only “Android 10”. Also in the future, Google would like to renumber its firmware only. The era of sweets in conjunction with Android has thus come to an end.
With the new naming, the company also introduces a new logo. The Android male is an integral part of the logo in the future. And this is how it looks like:
The new features of Android 10
The successor to Android 9 Pie not only promises more security, the operating system is also optimized for the next generation of foldable smartphones and 5G smartphones. But also for regular Android devices , Android 10 delivers many new features . For example, the firmware brings a system-wide dark fashion, integrates a comprehensive gesture control and gives users more control over apps and their permissions. Among other things, you can restrict location permissions for specific applications and set usage times for apps. Security patches and other updates can be installed in the background with Android 10, without having to shut down the system.
The new features of Android 10 has tested Google ahead of the official release of the beta program. To beta 21 Android smartphones are approved by 13 different manufacturers. The finished and official new Android firmware is expected in early September 2019. Initially, the smartphones approved for the beta program can look forward to the update. But other models will receive Android 10 Q. Which these are, shows this listing.
When does the update come on Android 10?
The smartphones of different manufacturers are usually supplied at very different times with Android updates. This is because manufacturers often place their own interface over the system, which also has to be adapted. As a result, it usually takes a while for updates to be ready and delivered. First manufacturers like Huawei, HMD Global (Nokia) and Xiaomi have already confirmed updates for their devices. Nokia, for example, starts distributing it in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Whether a device receives the update to Android 10, often depends on its timeliness. Fortunately, the owners of such smartphones may appreciate, whose manufacturers give an update warranty of one or even two years. Here you can easily read from the already received new versions of Android whether another update is planned. Manufacturers offering such update promises include Huawei / Honor, Motorola, OnePlus, Samsung and Sony. How long the guarantee is granted for updates and which model classes it covers is quite different.
Once again there are separate rules for smartphones with Android One . Because they come with Android in pure form and with a native interface. Manufacturers do not have to make any cumbersome adjustments to these devices. The update process is much faster and easier. Google gives a two-year update warranty on smartphones running Android One, which usually means two major new firmware versions. Android One smartphones on offer include HTC, Motorola, Nokia and Xiaomi.

Update plan of the manufacturer
But many other smartphones will receive the update to Android 10. Depending on the model and manufacturer, however, it may happen that owners have to wait a bit for the update. Sometimes it can take over a year, until manufacturers have adapted the new firmware accordingly and deliver it to their devices. Fast is usually the flagship, followed by popular mid-range smartphones. Below you can read about which manufacturers want to provide Android 10 for which of their smartphones:
HTC
HTC gives no direct update warranty. In part, the manufacturer even works on the rollout of Android 9 for its luxury-class smartphones. However, the manufacturer also has models with Android One on offer. And these in turn attacks the update warranty from Google. Specifically, in the case of the Android 10 update, it concerns the following models:
- HTC U11 life (Android One)
Huawei / Honor
The Chinese manufacturer Huawei sends with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro his top model in the beta program. The smartphone is therefore also the official update to Android 10 safe. Due to the US ban, Huawei is now the so-called future guarantee. With it, the manufacturer wants to reassure its users and point out that despite the trade dispute between the US and China in the future updates are safe. Recently, the US extended the grace period for Huawei for another three months until November 19 .
The future guarantee is not to be confused with the update promise. Huawei generally grants owners of its upper and middle-class smartphones at least two new firmware versions. At the subsidiary company Honor it is at least one. For the following models, the manufacturer has already confirmed the update to Android 10:
