Amazon integrates the payment option of buying products via a credit. For this purpose Amazon cooperates with the direct bank Barclaycard. The new function was activated on 11 November 2020. For some customers the innovation had been visible before, but the general availability was not given. Financing is available for a number of products from an order value of 100 euros. The maximum amount of financing available is stated as 3,000 Euro.

Items not in stock or temporarily unavailable are excluded from financing. The same applies to pre-orders, digital products and gift vouchers. Also the Prime membership cannot be financed by it.

Maturities of three to 48 months are available for the financing of purchases. The monthly instalments are calculated depending on these terms. The higher the total purchase price, the more choice there is in terms of the term and the amount of the instalments. Financing via Barclaycard has an effective annual interest rate of 7.69 percent. Amazon states that the financing is done online.

Processing in the payment process

The financing via Barclaycard is offered to customers during the payment process on the Amazon website. Anyone who decides to use financing must register with Barclaycard. After applying for financing, the purchase process is stopped and the product is reserved for 24 hours until the financing is approved by Barclaycard.

Once a financing limit has been determined, it should be possible to use it for subsequent purchases without an application. In addition, returns should be automatically compared with the financing. The financing presupposes an age of 18 years as well as a residence in Germany.

Amazon wants to offer customers more financial flexibility for purchases. However, there is a risk of getting into debt when buying by instalments because things are purchased for which there is no money. It should therefore be considered very carefully whether expensive products need to be bought if the money is not available.
