The December 2021 Android security patch has hit Samsung‘s Galaxy S10 series. The international versions of the 2019 Galaxy flagships are now picking up the latest SMR (security maintenance release) in some European countries, including Switzerland. The new update should soon reach units in other markets as well. Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ users can be on the lookout for an over the air (OTA) update with the firmware version G97xFXXSEFUL1 or something along that line.
Samsung has been seeding the December security update to its devices for more than two weeks now. It initially came bundled with the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta update for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, both of which have now received the stable One UI 4.0 update. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G was the first to pick up the new SMR with a stable software build. Since then, the company has seeded it to the Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Note 10 series, and now, the Galaxy S10 series.
Samsung today also released the updated monthly security bulletin detailing the contents of the December SMR. We have fixes for over 30 privacy and security issues found in Google’s version of Android. At least five of those issues are of critical severity.
Additionally, the latest SMR also patches 18 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. These are vulnerabilities that only affect Samsung’s Android devices. SVE items patched include two critical issues that could allow attackers to perform arbitrary memory write and code execution due to some improper configurations. Samsung has also fixed issues with Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets as well as its Exynos baseband.
These security fixes are now rolling out to the Galaxy S10 series
All of these vulnerability patches are now rolling out to the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+. If you’re rocking any of these Samsung phones, you should receive a notification about this update in the coming days if you haven’t already. As always, you can also manually check for updates from the Settings app on your phone. Simply navigate to the Software update menu and tap Download and install to check if you have any OTA update pending download.
Don’t be hopeful of any new features though. With the One UI 4.0 update just around the corner, Samsung isn’t sending any goodies just yet. The company is currently beta testing the new software for the Galaxy S10 series. We expect the stable update to arrive early next year. We will keep you posted.
