Don’t be surprised if it comes with Android Automotive!
GM, at its two-day Investor Day today announced that it will be debuting the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado EV at CES 2022 in January. This would be Chevy’s first all-electric truck, and it continues the automakers’ push into going all-electric. GM plans to have 30 EV models by 2025, and it is really ramping that up.
GM now has the Hummer EV (SUV and Truck), as well as the Cadillac Lyriq coming soon. And now the new Chevy Silverado EV is on its way as well.
The Silverado is very important to GM
The Silverado is one of Chevy’s and GM’s most popular models on the road. So making an EV version is a pretty big deal. And it seems to play into GM’s handbook of making EVs in its most popular styles first. There was the Bolt EV that launched in 2017 as a “cheap” EV that would get it market share. Now we have the Hummer returning as an EV, a new Cadillac SUV as an EV and now a truck from Chevy.
It’ll most likely have Android Automotive built-in. GM has said that it plans to have the majority of its models with Android Automotive over the next couple of years. And the Hummer EV also uses Android Automotive. So this should come as no surprise. GM was also one of the first to go all-in with Android Auto back in 2016. Essentially making it available for all of its Chevy models at the same time.
Chevy did not mention a lot about the new Silverado EV, they’ll definitely be holding those details for CES in January. But we do know that there will be an all-wheel drive version available. And it’ll have a fixed glass roof. That is something we’ve seen with a lot of EVs – Tesla, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Polestar 2, to name a few.
