IFA Plans To Make A “Full-Scale Return” This Year, In September

The pandemic affected a lot of things worldwide, tradeshows included. MWC 2020 was cancelled altogether, while IFA 2020 took a mostly virtual approach. Well, IFA is planning for a full-scale return this year, it seems.

IFA plans for a “full-scale” return in September

The information comes from Engadget, and on the official IFA website, the dates are mentioned. IFA 2021 will take place in September, starting on September 3, and ending on September 7. The registrations will begin in July.

IFA and its partners are hoping that the COVID-19 vaccinations programs will be effective enough to make it all possible. In fact, IFA claims that 80-percent of exhibitor slots have been reserved already, and it’s quite early.

Jens Heithecker, IFA executive director and Messe Berlin executive vice president, said the following: “don’t expect IFA Berlin 2021 to set new records”. He also added: “However, the trend is clear: IFA Berlin is set for a full-scale comeback, to lead our industry once more.”

IFA 2021 will bring two new events to the fold

IFA 2021 will even include two new events, “Tech Up for Women” and a Berlin Photo Week tie-in. So, the company is not expecting IFA 2021 to break any records, but good attendance is expected. As a reminder, IFA 2019 was attended by 238,700 visitors, 1,930 industry partners, and 5,360 journalists.

That being said, MWC 2021 is set to take place in late June. It is usually scheduled in the February-March timeframe, but GSMA was forced to push it back due to COVID-19.

The thing is, MWC 2021 is everything but set in stone. Quite a few companies already said they won’t be attending, including Google, Sony, Nokia, Ericsson, and Oracle. More companies may join that list, but we’ll see.

IFA 2021 is scheduled to take place two and a half months after MWC 2021, so it has a better chance of happening as intended. Vaccinations are on the way all around the globe, but it remains to be seen if that will be enough to make this year’s tech tradeshows possible.
