Samsung schedules a can’t-miss Wear OS/smartwatch event for MWC

One of the biggest surprises of 2021 so far is the announcement that Samsung and Google are teaming up to take on the smartwatch industry king: Apple. Samsung and Google (and Google’s newly acquired Fitbit) will work together to make Google’s Wear OS platform a better competitor to Apple’s watchOS.

While we’ve heard a bit from Google on this partnership, we haven’t heard much from Samsung. That will change on June 28 when Samsung holds a smartwatch-centered event at Mobile World Congress.

According to the official listing, the Samsung event will feature news on the “Galaxy ecosystem” as well as a “new watch experience.” Samsung claims that it is “reimagining smartwatches,” leaving little doubt as to the subject matter for the bulk of the event.

This will be the first in-depth examination of the Samsung Wear OS experience from Samsung itself. While it’s unlikely Sammy would debut any new Galaxy Watch hardware during the virtual event, it is a possibility. However, it’s not unreasonable to assume we might actually get a glimpse at what the new Wear OS looks like.

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 will likely run the new Wear OS. They will be the first non-Tizen smartwatches from the company in years.
