General Motor’s CEO, Mary Barra just introduced the all-new Chevy Silverado EV at CES 2022 today. And it really didn’t leave any surprises for us. It looks a lot like the gas-powered Silverado, but there are also some hints of the Chevy Bolt EV in there, especially in the grille.
What’s impressive for us is that, this is yet another vehicle from GM that will run on Android Automotive. That’s not a big surprise as Android Automotive is part of its Ultium platform. More specifically, it’s part of Ultifi, which is its Linux-based operating system within the Silverado EV. The Hummer EV also runs Android Automotive.
It doesn’t look like the Android Automotive system that you would see in a Volvo XC40 Recharge or a Polestar 2. It’s pretty heavily themed and customized here. But still works the same.
Up to 400-mile range, charging at up to 350kW
For those that are already into electric vehicles, these two metrics are going to impress you. GM says that the Silverado EV will get up to 400 miles on a charge. And it supports standard DC fast charging, at up to 350kW. Which makes it the fastest charging car, at least for now.
Really only one charging network has 350kW chargers – and that’s Electrify America. So you may not be charging at that speed all that often. But that should charge up the Silverado EV very quickly.
As for the other specs here, there is 664 horsepower with more than 780 lb-ft of torque. This enables a GM-estimated 0-60mph time of less than 4.5 seconds. That’s actually slower than the Hummer EV, which can go 0-60 in about 3 seconds. But that’s still much faster than a truck needs to go.
It can also handle up to 10,000 pounds of trailering and that is with up to 1,300 pounds of payload.
The Silverado EV also becomes the second Chevy vehicle to come with Super Cruise. Which was previously only available on some Cadillac models. It came to the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV last summer. And now comes to the 2024 Silverado EV.
GM says that the Silverado EV will be assembled in GM’s Factory ZERO in Detroit. This is a facility that was recently repurposed and retooled, devoted to EV production. In the spring of 2023, the Silverado EV will debut a Work Truck model offering the longest range battery giving you up to 400 miles. In the fall of 2023, the fully loaded RST First EDition model which also gets 400-mile range will debut at $105,000. That is the fully-loaded version.
Once GM ramps up production, Chevy will unleash the rest of the Silverado EV portfolio, which starts at $39,900 + DFC.
Ford just launched its pricing for the F-150 Lightning this week, and it comes in very close to the Silverado EV. The F-150 Lightning starts at $39,974, while the Silverado EV starts at $39,900.
