Windows 11 KB5017383 hands on: Dynamic Widgets and more

Windows 11 KB5017383 is now available for the original version 21H2 with several improvements. This patch is rolling out via Windows Update, but Microsoft has also published direct download links for Windows 11 KB5017383 offline installers on the Update Catalog.

KB5017383 is an optional update and it won’t install or even download on your device unless you manually select and install it. Note that this particular cumulative preview update is available on Windows 11 version 21H2 machines only (Windows 11 22H2 is excluded) and it advances PCs to Build 22000.1042.

The update would show up as “2022-09 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5017383)” on Windows Update. To download and install it, simply click the download button and reboot the system when asked. This is a pretty big update and bugs including installation issues are expected.

Build 22000.1042 is an optional cumulative update and changes included in this patch will begin rolling out to everyone with October 2022 Patch Tuesday cycle. In other words, you can safely skip the update if you don’t need these fixes.

Windows 11 KB5017383 (Build 22000.1042) changelog

Microsoft is introducing a new feature called “dynamic widgets”. This was previously exclusive to Windows 11 22H2, but it has been backported to version 21H2. With dynamic widgets, Microsoft is hoping to make the icon of the widget on the taskbar more engaging with regular updates.

At the moment, weather or widgets menu icon sits quietly at the bottom left of your screen/taskbar. You’ll be able to customize it to your liking. For example, if you prefer breaking news alerts, you can rely on the icon for the notifications.

Just came in:  Matter 1.0 is finally finalized — so what’s next?

A badge will automatically appear when there is a news update or scores update from your favourite game. Likewise, financial updates will also appear directly on the taskbar. The purpose of dynamic widgets is to make the information available to the users at a glance without even needing to open Edge.

In addition to dynamic widgets integration, Microsoft has also fixed several issues with Windows 11. For example, the company patched an issue where some apps would require reinstallation if you did not get the app from the Microsoft Store.

A Blue Screen of Death error has been fixed. Microsoft says the OS rendered a Blue Screen error when users changed the display mode when using more than one display. Another bug has been fixed where IE mode tabs were forced to reload a session. Likewise, Microsoft also fixed an issue that affects IE mode after you open a PDF file.

Here’s a list of all other important bug fixes:

  • Fixed an issue that causes a black screen when you use a pen to turn on the high dynamic range feature.
  • Fixed an issue where the touch keyboard crashes when you switch apps.
  • Fixed an issue that affects daylight saving time in Chile.
